The 18 hole championship layout was designed by course architects Tom Doak and Mike Clayton, and is set among sand dunes overlooking Bass Strait. The rolling fairways of the courses, set amongst the wild and dramatic landscape, look as though they were established long before, but it was in just 2004 that the first course opened for play. Barnbougle Dunes was once a strip of land along the coast of a potato farm on Tasmania's north east coast.
Barnbougle Dunes would hold its own with virtually any of them, and surpass most. This is a celebration of all the great things about links golf - all turned up a notch. Fairways are wide, wider than most golfers will have experienced on traditional courses. The outward nine plays through a series of saddles that both shelter and direct play lines. The back nine is more open but arguably more striking, with multiple panoramas of the course, adjoining the bay and nearby Bridport.
Dolphins, seals, and even migrating whales are often spotted during a round, making Barnbougle golf as memorable for its setting as for its challenge. The course rewards strategic thinking and creative shot-making, with the short 7th – Tom's little devil – one of the world's best par-3s. In summer (December–February), expect firm fairways, long daylight hours, and running conditions that mirror the great Scottish links.
