Opened in December 2010, Lost Farm sits on Tasmania's rugged northeast coast as the stunning younger sibling to Barnbougle Dunes. Designed by legendary architects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, this 20-hole links course flows across dramatic sand dunes that tower over 30 metres high, creating a landscape that feels timeless and utterly pristine. The routing offers something special compared to its older neighbour—holes run in all compass directions, meaning no two rounds ever play the same, especially when the wind picks up off Bass Strait.
What makes Lost Farm exceptional for a group trip is its blend of playability and theatre. Wide fairways are forgiving; bunkers punish the careless; greens have incredible run-off areas that reward strategic thinking. The par 3s—all six of them—are pure poetry, particularly the signature 4th hole overlooking the Forester River and ocean. Coore's minimalist philosophy shines throughout: the course feels carved from the land rather than imposed upon it.
The resort-style Lost Farm Lodge provides elegant on-site accommodation with views of the course, coastline, and Tasmanian hinterland. Caddies are available (pre-book essential) and add immeasurably to the experience with local knowledge. A short walk from your room gets you to the clubhouse, restaurant, and first tee. This is links golf at its purest—walking only, no carts unless medically necessary.
A group of golfers playing both Barnbougle courses will discover Australian golf at the highest level. Lost Farm's friendlier angles make it the more accessible of the two, yet it ranks #7 in Australia and #34 globally among public-access courses. Add world-class dining, a spa, and the raw beauty of Tasmania's northeast coast, and you've got the foundation for an unforgettable golf pilgrimage.
