Castlerock Golf Club

A hidden gem where the River Bann meets the Atlantic—two stunning links courses with legendary hospitality and unforgettable seaside drama.

About the Course

Perched on Northern Ireland's spectacular Causeway Coast, Castlerock Golf Club delivers world-class links golf that punches well above its profile. The championship Mussenden Course, named after a dramatic clifftop temple, sprawls across rolling dunes between the railway, the River Bann, and the Atlantic—creating a maze of natural hazards and breathtaking vistas. Every hole demands respect, especially the notorious 4th, the 'Leg O'Mutton,' a 200-yard par-3 where a railway line, a menacing burn, and pot bunkers surrounding a raised green make for one of golf's most memorable moments. Though less famous than neighbors Royal Portrush and Portstewart, serious golfers know Castlerock delivers equal parts challenge and charm—lightning-quick greens, wind-sculpted fairways, and views of Donegal to the west and the Isle of Islay to the north on clear days.

The Bann Course, a 9-hole gem tucked away beyond the clubhouse through dunes and caravan park, offers a different adventure entirely. Routed through towering sand hills close to the Atlantic shore, this Frank Pennink-designed course is audacious and dramatic—so penal in places that even skilled amateurs will struggle. The par-5 5th, 'Bannview,' is considered one of Ireland's most scenic holes, played downhill with the River Bann flanking the entire right side and three-sided dune framing the green.

Founded in 1901 and extended to 18 holes by legendary Scottish clubmaker Ben Sayers in 1908, Castlerock was further refined by Harry Colt in 1925 and underwent a recent transformation by Dr. Martin Hawtree, who redesigned six greens and enhanced the bunkering. The club radiates genuine warmth—this is links golf without pretense, where every visitor feels genuinely welcomed. A round here, followed by a pint and hearty meal in the spacious clubhouse, is pure golf travel magic.

Best Time to Visit
April through September offers the most reliable weather for links golf, with May through August providing extended daylight and generally calmer conditions. However, links golf thrives in autumn (September-October) with excellent course conditioning and fewer crowds. Avoid November through February when short daylight hours, cold winds, and potential rain dominate—though wind-proof golfers willing to embrace Atlantic gales will find firm, fast playing conditions and an authentic links experience.
