Enniscrone Golf Club

A moonscape of towering dunes and pure Irish links magic—one of Europe's most dramatic golf adventures.

About the Course

Perched on a windswept promontory jutting into Killala Bay, Enniscrone Golf Club is an unsung masterpiece of Irish links golf. The course unfolds across 400 acres of some of the largest dunes in Ireland, creating a landscape so otherworldly it's been described as a moonscape. Twelve of the eighteen holes weave directly through these towering sand formations, offering views of the Atlantic Ocean that punch your golf gut in the best way.

Eddie Hackett's original 1974 design married brilliance with restraint—the holes feel naturally sculpted from the land rather than forced upon it. Later, Donald Steel added six new holes that threaded even deeper into the dunes, refining the routing without softening the challenge. This isn't a course for the faint of heart. Blind tee shots, firm elevated greens that don't forgive, and Atlantic winds that transform club selection into educated guessing mean you'll use every club in your bag and question a few of your life choices.

Yet for groups willing to embrace the adventure, Enniscrone delivers something rare: authentic, dramatic, humbling links golf in a remote corner of Ireland where the sheep outnumber the golf tourists. The camaraderie that builds when your foursome is battling wind, dunes, and blind shots together creates the kind of memories that fuel golf friendships for years.

Why It's Great for Groups
  • Towering dunes that rival any in the world—the back nine especially is visually breathtaking and feels like navigating an alien landscape
  • Pure links routing with zero resort padding—every hole has purpose and personality, routing 'nine out, nine back' in traditional links fashion through natural terrain
  • Multiple standout holes that live long in memory: the 9th along the estuary, the dramatic par-4 15th, and the 542-yard 14th that winds through perfectly shaped dunes
  • Accessible value play compared to nearby famous courses—ranked Top 100 UK&I courses but without the inflated green fees of more publicized links
  • Small, welcoming club that genuinely values visitors and offers caddie services (€75 for experienced local caddies who know every blind shot and wind nuance)

Best Time to Visit
May through September offers the most stable weather and longer daylight (tee times at 8-minute intervals). Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) provide excellent conditions with fewer crowds and quieter, more contemplative rounds. Summer (July) brings the Black Pig Festival in nearby Enniscrone village. Winter (November-February) sees green fees drop to around €40-€50 but expect rain, wind, and unpredictable conditions—perfect for weather-hardened links purists. Avoid August peak season if seeking solitude.
