Great Waters (Great Waters)

Jack Nicklaus' masterpiece where championship golf meets one of America's most stunning lake-lined backniners.

About the Course

Opened in 1992, Great Waters stands as one of Jack Nicklaus' signature designs and a transformative moment in his architectural career. The course showcases the Golden Bear's philosophy of creating resort golf that feels fair and accessible while maintaining genuine championship challenge. The front nine winds through rolling hills and towering Georgia pines, featuring water on six holes but nothing penal—carefully designed with generous bailout options for every water hazard. This opening stretch is beautiful parkland golf at its finest, but it's merely the prelude. The back nine represents something extraordinary: eight of nine holes dance directly along the shores of Lake Oconee, creating a succession of postcard-worthy moments that rival the famous cliffside drama of Pebble Beach. The 14th hole, a 186-yard par-3 across an inlet to a peninsula green, has become one of the most photographed holes in the Southeast and rightfully demands both nerves of steel and precise execution. A comprehensive 2019 renovation by Nicklaus Design restored the course to its original specifications while modernizing infrastructure, and the result is championship conditioning and strategic hole design that challenges without punishing.

Why It's Great for Groups
  • The back nine is among the best nine holes of golf in America, with eight consecutive holes directly alongside Lake Oconee offering unmatched scenery and strategic variety
  • Jack Nicklaus design philosophy at its finest—championship-caliber course that rewards accuracy over distance with generous bailout options around water hazards
  • Located on a sprawling 12,000-acre resort with five other championship courses, allowing groups to play multiple architect-designed layouts in one trip
  • Perfect intermediate challenge between resort playability and professional-level difficulty, with forward tees at 4,500 yards and back tees stretching to 7,500 yards
  • Exceptional group golf destination with on-site luxury resort lodging, multiple restaurants, spa, marina access, and water sports integrated into the golf vacation

Best Time to Visit
March through November represents peak golf season with mild temperatures and lush greenery, though summer (June-August) offers the most vibrant lake scenery. Fall (September-November) provides excellent conditions with comfortable weather. Avoid Masters Week (early April) when prices spike dramatically to $300-$500. Spring brings the course to life after winter dormancy. Early summer when everything is green is when Great Waters truly shines aesthetically. December-February sees reduced rates but also occasional colder temps and maintenance activities that may restrict cart access.
