Gullane Golf Club No. 1

A mystical championship links rising over Gullane Hill with world-class greens and 360-degree coastal vistas that will steal your breath.

About the Course

Gullane No. 1 is a historic links course dating back to 1884 that winds up, around, and down Gullane Hill—one of golf's truly unique natural amphitheaters. The course delivers what Scottish golf is supposed to feel like: humpy-bumpy fairways, lightning-fast greens, and deep sod-faced bunkers that demand precision. Every hole possesses distinct character; the standout sequence happens around the 7th tee, where you'll enjoy what many consider one of golf's finest panoramic views—Edinburgh and the Forth bridges to the west, the Firth of Forth straight ahead, and Muirfield far below. The routing brilliance means you play elevated shots over the hill on the way out and descend through coastal terrain on the back nine. Greens at Gullane are legendary—among the very best in the UK, playable year-round due to the exceptional turf quality.

What makes Gullane special is how seamlessly it integrates into the village itself. Tee off near the town center and finish back among the cottages and pubs. The club hosted the Scottish Open in 2015 and 2018 and regularly serves as Open Championship Final Qualifying. For golfers who've played Muirfield and North Berwick and think they've seen the best East Lothian has to offer, Gullane No. 1 will surprise you—it's every bit their equal, with a character all its own.

Why It's Great for Groups
  • The 7th tee offers one of golf's greatest 360-degree vistas, overlooking three counties and seeing up to 17 different courses from that single vantage point
  • Championship-quality greens maintained to the highest standards year-round, ranked among the very best in Scotland regardless of season
  • Unique hillside routing that creates dramatic elevation changes unusual for a links course, delivering thrilling downhill tee shots particularly on the iconic 17th
  • Rich history as a multiple-time Scottish Open venue and regular Open Championship Final Qualifying site, with proven ability to challenge the world's best players
  • Perfect group experience with the 'Village of Golf' setting—all three courses begin and end in town, allowing easy access to restaurants, pubs, and accommodations within walking distance

Best Time to Visit
April through June and September through October offer the ideal balance of pleasant weather, reasonable green fees, and fewer crowds. May is particularly excellent—long daylight hours, low midge risk, and firm turf conditions. July-August brings peak season crowds and higher prices. Winter (November-February) features extremely cold, wet conditions and short daylight, though the greens remain exceptional and green fees drop significantly. Avoid the summer peak unless you want Edinburgh Festival atmosphere; shoulder seasons offer superior golf experiences.
