Joondalup Resort Golf Course

A dramatic 27-hole masterpiece carved through limestone quarries and bushland that demands respect from every golfer.

About the Course

Joondalup Resort is Perth's most thrilling golf destination, a raw and unforgiving masterpiece designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. that opened in 1985. The 27 holes are split into three distinct nines—Quarry, Dune, and Lake—each weaving through harsh Australian bushland with surprising personality. The signature Quarry nine cuts through a former limestone excavation with holes that feel almost alien in their drama: approach shots beneath 30-meter cliff faces, moon-crater bunkers the size of small houses, and greens perched precariously above gorges. This is Jones' most inventive Australian work, delivered when he was at his creative peak.

The Dune nine hammers home the punishment with severe elevation changes and thick scrub that borders fairways like prison walls. Massive elevated greens reward precision while punishing ego. The later-added Lake nine (1990) offers slightly more breathing room with open vistas and occasional glimpses of the Indian Ocean, though it's hardly a reprieve. This is not a course that coddles—elevation changes, contoured greens the size of quarter-acres, and strategic bunkering make every shot a puzzle. Even strong players report playing to much higher handicaps on first visits. The resort itself is tucked 25 minutes north of Perth in tranquil bushland, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, making it the ideal 54-hole destination for committed golfers seeking genuine challenge and complete accommodations in one place.

Why It's Great for Groups
  • World-class Robert Trent Jones Jr. design ranked #37 in Australia's Top 100 (Quarry/Dune combo) with holes that feel genuinely unique—no two play alike across the entire property
  • The dramatic Quarry nine features holes carved around limestone gorges and protected by bunkers of extraordinary scale; hole 3 requires a full carry over an abandoned quarry with the green perched 800m² away
  • Severe elevation changes throughout all three nines test club selection mercilessly; massive contoured greens (some up to ¼-acre) with dramatic slopes create compelling approach shot contests
  • On-site resort with 70 luxury rooms means no commuting—play all 27 holes with perfect logistics; endota Spa, multiple restaurants, and lagoon pool make this a complete golf experience
  • Australian wildlife abounds with kangaroos grazing fairways at dusk, native birds, and gum trees creating an authentic Outback setting just 5 minutes from the Sunset Coast

Best Time to Visit
September through November (spring) and December through February (summer) offer the ideal conditions with warm, dry weather and maximum sunshine. September is particularly recommended by visitors. Avoid July and August when temperatures drop to 11-19°C and rainfall peaks (over 100mm in July). The course plays firmer and faster during the dry summer months, sharpening the challenge even more.
