Killarney Golf & Fishing Club - Killeen Course

Where championship parkland meets lakeside majesty in Ireland's most scenic golf destination, blessed by waters and mountains.

About the Course

Nestled in Killarney National Park along the pristine shores of Lough Leane, the Killeen Course stands as one of Europe's finest inland layouts. Designed originally in 1972 by Eddie Hackett and Bill O'Sullivan, and masterfully reconstructed by Donald Steel in 2006, this course has hosted the Irish Open on four occasions—each time captured by an Englishman, most memorably twice by Nick Faldo. Water defines virtually every hole here, with tree-lined fairways creating an intimate parkland feel while the dramatic Macgillycuddy Reeks mountains loom as a constant, breathtaking backdrop.

The opening four holes hug Lough Leane directly, creating some of golf's most unforgettable moments. The par-3 third hole, "The Eagles Eye," carries over water with stirring lake views, while the front nine builds toward inland holes that demand precision and respect. The back nine features the signature par-3 10th—a thrilling forced carry over water—before building to the dramatic finishing hole, a downhill par-4 that plays back toward the elegant clubhouse.

What makes Killeen transcendent is its rare ability to challenge golfers of all levels without ever feeling unfair. Greens are firm and true, the conditioning impeccable, and the Irish hospitality genuinely warm. After your round, the award-winning Horseshoe Bar & Restaurant serves modern Irish cuisine with panoramic views that rival the course itself. This is championship golf in paradise.

Best Time to Visit
May and September offer the ideal balance—mild weather (9-17°C), fewer crowds than peak summer, and some of the most stable weather conditions of the year. Late spring (May-early June) brings fresh greens and longer daylight, while September offers autumn beauty without October's heavy rainfall. Avoid December-February for harsh winter conditions and January-March for lowest visitor availability and wettest weather. Summer (July-August) guarantees the warmest temperatures but brings peak crowds to both the course and town.
