Mammoth Dunes at Sand Valley Golf Resort

Golf Digest Top 100 Public·#29

Where colossal fairways and gargantuan greens meet dramatic sand ridges to create a golfer's playground.

About the Course

Mammoth Dunes is David McLay Kidd's masterpiece that proves a championship course can be eminently playable and pure fun. Routed around a massive V-shaped ridge native to Sand Valley's 12,000-acre property, the course features some of the widest fairways and most generous green complexes in American golf—living up to its "mammoth" namesake. The design philosophy is refreshingly honest: great golf doesn't need to punish. Instead, Kidd created bold, strategic corridors that encourage creative play while rewarding good shots.

Playing Mammoth Dunes feels like golf on a different scale entirely. The exposed sand dunes tower above you, creating a sense of standing on your own planet. Yet despite the dramatic landscape and generous dimensions, the course demands precision—know where to position yourself on those sprawling fairways and you'll have manageable approaches; miss the right sections and you're left with impossible angles. It's golf that builds confidence in casual players while still challenging the elite.

The experience is elevated by the complete Sand Valley ecosystem: stay in cottages perched on sand ridges, dine at farm-to-table restaurants, and walk every hole with either your caddie or a pull trolley (no carts allowed). The walking-only policy enhances the connection to the landscape and allows you to truly absorb the course's immense scale. What makes Mammoth special for groups is how it levels the playing field—high handicappers can genuinely enjoy competing with scratch players here.

From the strategic undulations of the 5th to the unforgettable island green par-3 18th surrounded by seas of sand, nearly every hole tells a story. The course routinely ranks among Golf Digest's Top 30 courses in America and represents the new standard for how modern courses can be both world-class and wonderfully welcoming.

Why It's Great for Groups
  • Colossal fairways averaging 120+ yards wide with gargantuan greens that rival some par-3s at other courses, creating a brutally honest test that rewards precision over power while remaining eminently playable for all skill levels
  • Walking-only access with optional caddies amplifies the connection to the landscape; the dramatic sand ridge topography towers above you, making you feel like you're golfing on another planet
  • Ranked 27th in Golf Digest's Top 100 Greatest Public Courses and considered many players' favorite at Sand Valley ahead of the acclaimed original—a landmark David McLay Kidd design that proved great courses don't need to be punishing
  • Perfectly suited for mixed-ability groups where ego-check moments are minimized; high handicappers face genuine opportunities to score while low handicappers still face strategic complexity in every hole
  • Complete golf resort experience on 12,000 acres: on-property lodging ranging from lodge rooms to 4-bedroom suites, farm-to-table dining, hiking, fishing, and multiple championship courses all accessible via included shuttle service

Best Time to Visit
May through October is ideal. Early October is considered the best weather of the year—cool temperatures, less humidity, and dramatic fall foliage with smaller crowds. May through June offers pleasant spring weather and rapid greening. July-August can be hot and humid but features firm, fast conditions. June-September is peak season with premium pricing. Avoid November-April as the resort closes during Wisconsin winters, though it recently began offering winter activities including ice sports and pond hockey.
