PGA Aroeira No.1 (Pines Classic)

Portugal's legendary 'Wentworth of Lisbon'—a pristine pine-lined masterpiece where championship pedigree meets year-round perfection near the Atlantic.

About the Course

Set deep within a protected 350-hectare pine forest just 30 minutes south of Lisbon, PGA Aroeira No.1 is a masterclass in strategic design. Designed by Frank Pennink and reopened in late 2024 as Portugal's first PGA National course, this championship layout demands precision and respect. Every fairway narrows between towering pines, forcing golfers to think off the tee; the greens are lightning-fast and protected by water and bunkers that reward only the most thoughtful approach shots. The par-3 8th hole—a 190-meter beast with a severe downslope—remains one of Europe's most memorable tests. The course's mild microclimate allows golf year-round, while the pristine conditioning after extensive recent renovations has restored it to its former glory as a host of the 1996 and 1997 Portuguese Opens. Groups will find themselves completely absorbed in the course's natural beauty, the ocean breezes carrying the scent of pine, the rhythm of play broken only by birdsong and the occasional sound of the Atlantic nearby.

Why It's Great for Groups
  • Championship pedigree: Hosted the Portuguese Open in 1996 and 1997, plus Ladies European Tour events—proof this layout tests professionals and amateurs alike
  • Signature holes that stick with you: The dramatic par-3 8th and the serpentine par-4 11th with its blind tee shot and water-guarded green are true standouts
  • Newly renovated to championship condition: Two years of dedicated work have transformed this course into one of Europe's best-maintained layouts
  • All-year golf in a temperate microclimate: Portugal's unique coastal location means your group can play comfortably October through May when most European courses are shuttered
  • Complete resort ecosystem: Stay at the on-site Aroeira Lisbon Hotel, practice at the golf academy, enjoy the tropical pool, and finish the day at authentic Portuguese restaurants—everything a golf group needs in one secure, gated compound

Best Time to Visit
October through May offers the mildest weather and the most comfortable playing conditions; the temperate microclimate means you can reliably golf year-round, but the summer months (July-August) are very warm. Spring (March-April) and fall (September-October) are ideal for groups, with consistent temperatures and lush greens. Avoid midsummer unless you're heat-tolerant.
