Praia D'El Rey Golf & Beach Resort

A stunning Atlantic coastal masterpiece where windswept dunes meet pine forests, creating one of Europe's most dramatic links-parkland hybrids.

About the Course

Set among extensive pine forests and undulating dunes, with spectacular views over the Atlantic and the Berlengas Islands beyond, the 18-hole golf course was designed by the renowned American golf architect Cabell B. Robinson and was inaugurated on 14th June 1997. The course is a mixture of seaside links and parkland holes with a par of 73, offering the golfer a unique experience. Rather like the excellent layout at Oitavos just down the Portuguese coast, Praia D'El Rey mixes great holes cut through lush vegetation with a number of holes that run along the coastline and encompass sand dunes and links-style challenges whilst at the same time providing amazing views of the Atlantic Ocean and the nearby Berlenga Islands. The front nine weaves through fragrant pine forests with residential properties, while the back nine transforms into pure coastal links golf with dramatic ocean vistas dominating holes 12-15. Deep bunkers, sloping greens and sandy dunes contrast sharply with the lush fairways, making it the complete golfing challenge. Located just under an hour north of Lisbon, this is golf that rewards precision while punishing carelessness, with Atlantic winds adding another strategic layer to the challenge.

Why It's Great for Groups
 • The back nine is pure coastal theatre—four consecutive oceanside holes (12-15) with dramatic Atlantic views that rank among Europe's finest golfing settings
 • A rare links-parkland hybrid that offers two completely different golf experiences in one round, keeping groups engaged and entertained
 • Excellent value compared to other top European courses, with strong practice facilities and multiple accommodation options directly on property
 • Well-integrated resort destination with three courses accessible within minutes (Praia D'El Rey, West Cliffs, and nearby Royal Óbidos), perfect for multi-course golf trips
 • Walking-friendly layout for those in reasonable condition, with spectacular ocean-side walking opportunities—particularly on the dramatic back nine

Best Time to Visit
Praia D'El Rey is one of the most popular courses in Portugal, with almost 40,000 rounds played per year. During the high season (March–October) and the low season (November–February) you must book in advance. The best golfing conditions typically occur in spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) when temperatures are moderate and Atlantic winds are generally manageable. February offers exceptional value with pleasant, sunny weather. Avoid July-August if possible, as heat can be intense and the course fills with resort guests. Winter months (November-February) bring reliable conditions but occasional fog and rain.
