Ram Rock Golf Course at Horseshoe Bay Resort

Famously known as 'The Challenger,' Ram Rock stands as one of Texas's most formidable and respected championship golf courses. Designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1981, this par-71 masterpiece has hosted the Texas State Open and numerous USGA qualifying events. The course weaves through the rugged Texas Hill Country landscape with narrow fairways, dramatic elevation changes, 62 deep bunkers, 10 water hazards, and natural dry creeks that test every aspect of your game.

What makes Ram Rock truly memorable is its setting overlooking Horseshoe Bay and Lake LBJ. Players navigate uneven lies while granite rock outcroppings frame holes throughout the course. The signature island green par-3 fourth hole—at 191 yards—is one of the most photographed and demanding holes in Texas golf, requiring both accuracy and nerve in equal measure.

The conditioning is meticulous with Crenshaw Bentgrass greens and Bermuda fairways. Bob Crenshaw once called it the hardest test of golf in Texas, and while that claim is decades old, Ram Rock remains one of the state's most challenging and rewarding courses. It's not a course that savages all golfers—mid and high handicap players can still enjoy it from the forward tees—but it will absolutely command your respect.

Ram Rock is one of three Robert Trent Jones Sr. courses at the resort (the 'Texas Triangle'), all accessible to resort guests. The course features an excellent on-cart GPS system that proves invaluable given the elevation changes and blind approaches, plus a clubhouse with dining and drinks for post-round celebrations.
