Royal Portrush Golf Club - Valley Links

A hidden gem of pure links golf where wind-sculpted dunes and championship turf create an unforgettable test in one of the world's most dramatic coastal settings.

About the Course

Nestled between the East Strand and the championship Dunluce Links, Royal Portrush's Valley Links is a full-length championship course that stands magnificently on its own. While forever shadowed by its illustrious older sibling, the Valley offers golfers a more intimate, protected experience—the course winds through the legendary War Hollow, a sheltered valley believed to be the site of an ancient battle around 1102. The elevation changes rival Turnberry and Birkdale, providing exceptional views across the course and out toward the Antrim coastline.

This is where Graeme McDowell—now a Ryder Cup hero and U.S. Open champion—honed his craft as a young club member, and that lineage of excellence runs deep through the Valley's DNA. The course demands precision with small, cleverly positioned greens and strategically placed bunkers (only 22, yet their threat feels far greater). Natural hazards including gorse, native fescues, and rolling dunes create a stern examination for serious golfers. The turf is immaculate, the fairways tight, and while the course won't punish wildly, it rewards accuracy in spades.

What makes the Valley special for a group trip is the purity of the experience—authentic links golf without pretension, stunning Northern Ireland hospitality, and the thrill of walking the same hallowed turf that has produced major champions. The drive in is spectacular, and the entire experience—from arrival to the warm clubhouse welcome—creates memories that linger long after you've left.
