Redesigned in 1921 by the legendary Dr. Alister MacKenzie, the Portland is an 18-hole links course of very high standard, yet it remains a hidden treasure in the shadow of its world-famous sibling. Located slightly further inland than the Old Course, the Portland has its own clubhouse and no holes bordering the Firth of Clyde. Although shorter and more sheltered than the Old Course, the Portland still provides a satisfyingly testing experience for every golfer, with each hole twisting and turning through traditional gorse and broom-lined fairways. The course reveals itself through strategic bunkering, undulating greens, and five par-3s balanced by four powerful par-5s on the back nine, creating a perfectly paced links experience. Located further inland, the Portland Course is one of Scotland's more underrated courses from its perfect conditioning to compelling holes—a must-play in any trip to this part of the country.
