Torrey Pines Golf Course (North)

Walk the clifftop fairways where PGA Tour stars warm up—this is championship golf that won't break the bank.

About the Course

Perched on dramatic coastal bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Torrey Pines North Course delivers a golfing experience that rivals its more famous sibling at a fraction of the cost. This isn't some consolation prize—it's a Tom Weiskopf redesign that took an already stunning layout and made it more playable, more fun, and arguably more scenic than the U.S. Open venue next door.

The front nine works its way along rolling terrain dotted with rare Torrey pine trees, building anticipation with solid golf holes before the spectacular back nine arrives. Here's where the course truly shines: holes like the downhill par-3 6th and the panoramic 7th showcase some of the finest ocean views on the California coast. The par-3 15th might be the most photographed hole on the property, dropping 70 feet toward the green with the La Jolla coastline stretching endlessly in both directions.

What makes the North special for groups is its accessibility without sacrificing the championship pedigree. You're playing a course that hosts PGA Tour rounds during the Farmers Insurance Open—the same greens, the same ocean breezes, the same jaw-dropping setting. The Weiskopf redesign enlarged greens, reduced bunkers, and added strategic variety that rewards smart play without punishing mid-handicappers. This is a course where everyone in your group will have stories to tell, whether it's navigating the deep ravines, battling the coastal wind, or simply standing on the tee at the par-4 16th as it climbs along Pacific cliffs. At around 94,000 rounds per year, it's beloved by locals and bucket-list golfers alike—and for good reason.

Why It's Great for Groups
  • You're playing a PGA Tour course at municipal rates—the North hosts tournament rounds during the Farmers Insurance Open and delivers championship golf for $97-$204 depending on timing
  • The ocean and canyon views rival or exceed the South Course, particularly on holes 6, 7, and the stunning clifftop par-3 15th that drops toward the Pacific with La Jolla stretching below
  • Tom Weiskopf's 2016 redesign made it more enjoyable for all skill levels while maintaining championship character—bigger greens, strategic bunkering, and a drivable par-4 that adds risk-reward excitement
  • Two excellent on-site resorts (The Lodge at Torrey Pines and Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines) offer priority tee times and Stay & Play packages, making logistics seamless for groups
  • The North is more walkable and forgiving than the South, creating a better pace and vibe for buddy trips—you'll still shoot challenging scores, but everyone finishes with smiles instead of bloodied scorecards

Best Time to Visit
September through November is ideal—warm weather, clear skies, lighter crowds, and greens in pristine post-aeration condition. October is particularly excellent. Avoid January-February when the Farmers Insurance Open brings peak crowds and course closures. Summer has great weather but morning fog (June Gloom) and higher demand. Spring (March-May) offers solid conditions but more tourists. Year-round play is viable given San Diego's climate, but fall delivers the sweet spot of conditions, value, and availability.
